A Hunterdon County firefighter who died in March 2013 while working with the New Jersey Forest Fire Service will be memorialized next month at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
Jeffrey Scheuerer, 35, of Raritan Township, was an active volunteer with the Readington Volunteer Fire Co. dating to his high school days at Hunterdon Central High School, according to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. He also worked as a district warden with the New Jersey Forest Fire Service, the foundation says.
He is among 98 firefighters across the nation who died in the line of duty in 2013. Those firefighters and nine others who died in previous years are to be remembered at a candlelight service 6:30 p.m. Oct. 12 at the National Fire Academy. It's the 33rd year the service has been held.
As part of the remembrance, bronze plaques with the names of the fallen will be added to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial, located on the academy campus, the foundation says.
"The loss of any firefighter is difficult, but last year was especially tragic for the United States fire service because of the high number of firefighters who died in the line of duty," Dennis Compton, chairman of the National Fallen Firefighters Board of Directors, said in a statement.
Scheuerer was conducting a controlled burn along with other firefighters about 11:30 a.m. March 28, 2013, when he was struck by a vehicle on Lebanon-Stanton Road, also known as Route 629, near Round Valley Reservoir in Clinton Township, the Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office previously said.
The prosecutor's office previously said heavy smoke from the burn played a part in the crash, as a shift in the wind led to reduced visibility.
Scheuerer was laid to rest less than a week later in a ceremony attended by members of more than 30 fire departments.
